Our special guest last Monday was Simon Jones who brought us up to date with the many projects and initiatives the SBA has underway.
Although COVID restrictions have been been a real struggle for many of its members, all seem to be still hanging in there (and five new businesses have opened) thanks to the tremendous support from the local community.
The newly developed Quercus Corner, with planter boxes, tables and chairs featuring walls with bright murals, has created a relaxing place for busy shoppers and visitors to Stirling.
The fairy lights on the trees in town and on the Library Lawn celebrate the iconic Oaks planted by our farsighted ancestors which "make" Stirling what it is today.
The SBA has called for now disused Stirling Police Station to remain in community hands and to be developed into a wine centre and art gallery.
In perhaps the most challenging project undertaken to date, the SBA has thrown its weight behind efforts to fulfill a longstanding ambition in the community to see the construction of a Grandstand and Pavilion on the Stirling Centennial Oval.
Simon will, himself, act a Chair of the Stirling Pavilion Foundation to raise the funds necessary to make the Pavilion a reality at last. This will take the combined efforts of three levels of government, and the support, in cash and kind, of local businesses, sporting and service organisations and the community at large.
Meeting Next Monday
Members and partners have been invited to join a joint meeting with the RC of Mt Barker. The guest speaker is the Hon Martin Hamilton-Smith whose very timely topic is "Strategic Policy in the Indo-Pacific and what it means for Australia.". This is a topic on which he is particularly well informed.
After graduating from the Royal Military College Duntroon, he had a distinguished career commanding troops in Malaysia, heading up the SASR and as Commanding Officer of the Australian contingent of an international peacekeeping force in Egypt while based on the Sinai Peninsula...and this before sitting in State Parliament in several Ministerial portfolios culminating as leader of the Opposition. He now enjoys a successful career in business,
28 members, partners and guests from Stirling are so far registered to attend the dinner which starts at 6:00pm.
RYLA Graduation Dinner
Rob Hill (and Helen) and Michelle attended the RYLA Graduation to support our own delegate, Lucy Kopp, who was introduced to us last week. By all accounts she had a wonderful week at RYLA - 'a life changing experience' and made many new friendships. She will be invited to tell us all about it at a later date. We are also sponsoring Natalie Teasdale and part sponsoring a Mt Barker delegate to attend NYSF in January, so hopefully we can once again have a 'youth' night and hear from all these young people at the same time.
The Sculpture Exhibition is on again!
Tim Boon and Jan Lyon have secured Stangate House once again for the two week period from Monday 25 April to Sunday, 8 May 2022. This is great news because it has now become a signature event in the club's calendar and one that ticks all the boxes in meeting our goal of acting local and raising our profile in the community.
In spite of a COVID ravaged season, last year's exhibition arguably was the best one yet and serves a a terrific foundation moving forward.
Veteran organisers from earlier exhibitions are mostly all on board and are about to start the planning process. While actually running the event is an "all of club": effort, we do have a need for a couple more members to join the sub-committee to put together something even more special in 2022. The first sub committee meeting is this Wednesday (September 29) at 3:00pm at Tim and Jan's place. Please contact Tim if you are interested in helping to take some of the load from our very dedicated and hardworking curators..
