This is Why Many of Us Joined Rotary!

Of course, we joined to give back to the community and to help others anywhere in the world in need, but when someone close to us suffers a loss, EVERYBODY is immediately there for them.

What a great effort on Wednesday as 19 members fronted up to Don and Donna's place in Bradbury, carrying all manner of tools, equipment...and food (thanks Stephen!), dressed and ready to get stuck into recovering whatever they could before the heavy equipment came in to clear the site. Many others, who were unable to attend due to work and other prior commitments, offered support and encouragement to the team.

Unfortunately, the fire had been so hot and intense, that pretty much all that remained standing were a shed and the walls of the house and studio. A lifetime of family experiences and treasures were reduced to rubble; complete devastation.

On the positive side, Don and Donna escaped physical harm, have retained their many happy memories and the house was adequately insured, giving them options as they consider their next steps. Their daughter, Kerry, and Don were also on hand to steer the salvage team to the most likely locations where valuables might be found and to assess any items recovered.  Don and Donna are currently living with Kerry who is continues to provide incredible emotional and more tangible and loving support.

Acting President Susanne and Greg Russell, who is organising the club's response to their loss, thanked all who participated in the work party.

While all club members extended their heartfelt best wishes, at our meeting on Monday, on a more practical note, the club presented Don with a cheque to help cover immediate, out of pocket expenses.

Pauline has also opened a GoFundMePage for individual donations from colleagues, family and friends of whom there are many, including Rotary and the Friends of Scott Creek Conservation Park of which both Don and Donna are highly respected, long time members. As of Saturday night, some $2,750 has been made available to them.

Next Meeting

Rennis Lodewickus of the RC of Mobilong has a great story to tell about how his club runs their Friends of Rotary program.  Find out how they have managed to raise $60,000 through this initiative.

A couple of important reminders!

There will be no meeting on Monday, 15 February to encourage all members to join with members of the Onkaparinga club as they celebrate the 43rd anniversary of the granting of their charter on Wednesday, 17 February.  The celebrations start at 6:00 for 6:30pm at the Lobethal Bierhaus, 3A Main St, Lobethal. This is a Partners night so please confirm your attendance to Dick Wilson on Monday. The cost will be $25 pp.

Also, note that time is running out to register for the first ever District 9510 Conference to be held 16-18 April at Westminster School, Marion.  Those who have been to District Conferences in the past, know how much fun and fellowship there is accompanying the incredibly knowledgeable and inspirational speakers on the agenda.

Take advantage of the fact this will be so close to home, making attendance so much easier and affordable.  To register click here for more information.

...and Finally, Last One for the Season!

The Four Way Test
Of all the things we think, say and do

Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Please support the Friends of Rotary the way they support us!
